Construction underway on the thrust blocks of the Gilman Drive Bridge, which will connect east and west campus - primarily providing better connections for graduate housing to main campus and the medical center to the medical school.
This bridge has been on the campus' construction timeline for something like 20 years. Originally, the structural engineering department had plans to build it as a demonstration project for carbon-fibre bridges:
Francesco Lanza di Scalea, Vistasp M. Karbhari, Frieder Seible, "I-5/Gilman advanced technology bridge project", Proc. SPIE 3988, Smart Structures and Materials 2000: Smart Systems for Bridges, Structures, and Highways, (20 April 2000); doi: 10.1117/12.383138; http://dx.doi.org/10.1117/12.383138
For non-paywall reading, see: Caltrans' Preliminary Evaluation of the Hybrid Tube Bridge System, which covers this project and the actual demonstration project, a boring desert bridge, the King Road Stormwater Channel bridge. Driving across it, you might never guess there was anything unusual about it - Google Earth of Composite Bridge.
The only remaining web-based mentions of the bridge are on a very fragmented Archive.org capture of i5gilman.org from 2002.
