"Hey this doesn't belong here!" was my first thought seeing this. The leaf color and shape, and specific bark coloration reminds me strongly of the manzanita species that are more common above 5000 feet than what we see at the coast. And that is one of the defining characteristics of Del Mar Manzanita, Arctostaphylos glandulosa ssp crassifolia, a manzanita of already extremely limited range, whose natural range has been largely been paved over as we humans moved in.
