California Fan Palms, Washingtonia filifera, derives its name (filifera) from the "filaments" of fiber that hang from the fronds of the tree. While Mexican Fan Palms' young fronds show the same, they lose their fibers fairly quickly, while the native California Fan Palm will show them for life.
