(photo on the top) The James Mize farm lies at the edge of Rockcastle River, Eagle Creek and Mize Branch. The photo shows the outline of the "Wad" Mize home foundation. It is one of the few spots in the valley which is flat and not rugged so it is a beautiful place to farm. The soil is rich and water sources are plenty. James’ father Isaac lived on the Mize Branch for several years and the valley is the site of a former Indian town. (photo on the bottom)Photo of the James “Wad” Mize farm site located at the confluence of Eagle Creek and the Rockcastle River. The only recognizable thing on the farm is the stone enclosure for the well in the foreground. The Rockcastle River is at the left of the photo.

James William Mize, the oldest son of John C. Mize and Sarah J., was born during August 1877 in Rockcastle County. James William was nicknamed “Wad” Mize. Why he was nicknamed this peculiar name is not known. This was told to me during an interview with Earl Mize, the son of Millard Mize during 1990. “Wad” married Hallie Ann Whitacker on 1 June 1899 in Rockcastle County. They were married in the presence of Robert Mise and Robert McClure. They both resided in the same county at the time of their marriage. They were married at the house of William Minks in the presence of Arthur Taylor and R. P. Norton, Robert Mise and Robert McClure. James was 22 years old and she was 19 years old. Hallie Ann used the aliases of Nilie and Herly in addition to her given name of Hallie Ann. On the 1900 census Rockcastle County, Kentucky, Doc Waddle is listed as living in the same household as “Wad.” Doc Waddle was born during March 1877. Hallie Ann was born 20 October 1985 and she died on 16 March 1949. Both James and Hallie are buried in the Martha A. Mize Cemetery located on route 1249 in Rockcastle County
