“Jennie” died of child bed fever which was usually caused by lack of sanitary conditions during birthing. An
interesting story goes along with the picture of Jennie. My grandma Stone, Eula Lay, was visiting a relative
in Atlanta, Georgia and was looking in the phone book for anybody with the last name of Godby. She came across
a man with the last of Gody and called him to ask if he was related to the Lays in Pulaski County. By chance, he
was the son of Jennie and Marcil Godby. He explained to Grandma that he had never seen his mother because she
had died young giving birth. Grandma said that she had the original painting and when she returned to Jeffersontown,
she sent the picture to the man. He gave her a call to thank her for sending it and she said that she could hear him
crying because at the time he was dying from cancer. She had given the picture to me as a kid and she told me the story
about the Godby man and his circumstances. Good things come to God’s people.
